Your Project Title
|
The
evolution of women’s representation in the media from the 1960’s-present.
|
Pathway
(Preferred Creative Media ‘specialism’):
Journalism,
Photography, Film, Graphic Design, Web Design, Sound Design etc. This may be
a combination of one or more. How has this changed since you started the
course?
|
|
When I started the course, I was very much
into the journalistic and graphic design elements it had to offer. I don’t
think that has really changed, however, with the new skills I have learnt so
far I feel that I can produce a more professional and finished final product.
For my FMP, I am creating a magazine, most
probably a print magazine, about the evolution of women’s representation in
the media.
This is a topic I am very passionate about and I feel needs to be spoken about a lot more. In my magazine, I will tackle monumental adverts from each decade starting from the 1960’s to present. I will display this in 6 double page spreads, excluding the front and back covers and the contents page.
I am mainly going to be using Adobe
InDesign CC 2018 to produce my magazine and Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 to edit
any images I use.
So far, my research is going very well and
I am really enjoying researching different adverts throughout time and seeing
how the public’s perception of women in media has drastically changed but
still has long way to go. I am really excited to start production.

Section 1: Project
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
Since starting the course in September, What
do you know now, and what does it mean to you, (compared with what you knew
and could do before you started the course). How does what you know now
influence your choice of pathway and your project proposal.
|
|
Since
starting the course, I have developed a whole new skill set. I didn’t know
how to use any of the Adobe software’s and the whole thing was quite
daunting. I think I have made a lot of progress. I also think there are definitely
some software that I am a lot more confident with. I think the hardest
assignment for me was the one involving Dreamweaver so I decided to avoid
Dreamweaver and websites for my FMP so I could produce something I was proud
of and focus on something I enjoy.
I now
know how to use most of them, some better than others. I think overall I am
most confident with InDesign and Photoshop, hence the reason I am using
mainly these two for my FMP. I didn’t think it was wise to learn new software
when producing my FMP because it wouldn’t be as professional and I definitely
end up handing in an unfinished product.
I am
very excited to produce my magazine, research is going well. I think because
I have chosen a topic I am very passionate about, I am more excited to research
and produce something about it. I am also excited to produce another magazine
as it was probably my favourite assignment so far and the final product that I
am most proud of.
|
|
Section 2 Project Concept: (approx. 200
words)
Clearly explain the concept and aims of your project and the context, research and ideas that will support its development. What are the historical, economic, social, mass media, cultural, political
influences? What is it you want to
communicate and who is your audience?
What access might you need to workshops and specialist equipment? How will
you use independent study?
|
|
I am
creating a magazine, most probably a print magazine, about the evolution of
women's representation in the media throughout time. I am going to do my
magazine about print adverts and campaigns. As in, ads and campaigns that
were released in magazines, newspapers, and billboards or later on, on social
media or websites.
I have
chosen this topic as I am very passionate about it and I think it is
something we need to discuss more. Throughout time, women have been
misinterpreted and wrongly represented in the media. When asked, women in the
media industry are appreciative of the progress made so far but still feel
there is a long way to go. A writer for www.marketingweek.com said 'There’s a
genuine desire to move with the times. But there’s still a long way to go. We
need to stop featuring women as peripheral characters.'
I haven’t
got a specific target audience, generally speaking I am targeting a younger
audience to inform them on how advertisement has changed and how lucky they are
to experience media from a more rounded and equal view. Like I mentioned
before, women’s representation in the media has a very long way to come but I
want to tackle how we have changed over time.
|
|
Section 3 Evaluation and Reflection: (approx.
50 words)
Explain how you will reflect on, and evaluate
your work, as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the project.
You should describe how you intend to record your decision making and how you
will document changes to your ideas as work progresses. The evaluation should be referred back to your
aims. It must be reflective (‘why? Because?’) And analytical rather than a
description of actions completed.
|
|
In
terms of ongoing progress within my planning, I will be updating and
reflecting on my Trello board (https://trello.com/b/QLRLULlM/fmp)
weekly and commenting on it in the planning part of my blog.
I am
also going to be updating my reflective log at the end of each week and
commenting on any of progress made and any important decisions made. I find
this the best to reflect and also see what progress has been made so far and
see what I have left to do.
|
|
Section 4: Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard format)
Record the initial research sources, both
primary and secondary, that you intend to use. Your sources of research should be as wide
as possible, including libraries, museums, galleries, journalism, articles,
media, galleries, books, film/video, magazines, TV/radio programmes, web
sites etc.
|
|
So far I
have been researching about media in each decade and seeing how the
representation of men and women differs and how it has changed. This is a
link to my bibliography (https://jayafmp.blogspot.com/p/bibliography_1.html)
with all the websites I have visited so far and when I accessed them.
In
terms of primary research, I have visited a few museums and taken some photos
which can be found here (https://jayafmp.blogspot.com/p/pre-production.html).
I am also planning on making a questionnaire or survey to add to my primary
research.

This was my Pechakucha. It was 20 slides long and I spoke about each slide for around 20 seconds. Overall, I think my Pechakucha went really well. I had solid points to explain each decade and why I have chosen my topic. I think the feedback was also very helpful. One of the main pieces of feedback that really helped me was someone said 'why have you chosen to start from the 1960's'. that is something I haven't thought about or discussed. I think the main reason why I chose to start from '60's was because that was when advertising started to steer away from war propaganda and started to advertise generally. It was the first time women were used in advertisement in a way that was still negative but wasn't about their role in war but there role/position in society.
